Ladies, are you Growing Up Gracefully?
If you're a frequent listener of Triple J, you'll be familiar with Hannah Reilly, the wonderful host of weekly sex and relationships podcast, The Hook Up. Now, Hannah is joined by her sister, Eliza, as they attempt to follow etiquette guides for women from the 1950s and now, in their new series, Growing Up Gracefully.
Entirely presented and produced by the Reilly sisters, Growing Up Gracefully is a 6-part comedic documentary series cross social experiment, where the two twenty-something women compare old fashioned etiquette with modern day Cosmo-style advice available online.
Throughout the series, Hannah tries her best to follow the old, while Eliza follows the new. But despite the explicitly sexist advice Hannah follows from the 1950s etiquette book Growing Up Gracefully, of which the series title is based, the advice for women today is full of equally disappointing patriarchal undertones, as Eliza attempts to look her best with botox, take bikini selfies for Insta, become a 'cool girl' and find her 'girl squad.'
Each episode explores a different area of 'etiquette,' including socialising, looks, dating, sex and work. It's full of laughs, plenty of cringe-worthy moments and each episode concludes with a hilarious musical theatre act. So check out the second last episode tonight at 9:30pm AEST on ABC TV or catch up on the rest of the series on iView.
